The Bachelor Pad

The Bachelor Pad: So, I got a new job last October that is just under 100 miles from my house. In the Greater Sao Paulo area you basically have two choices. Live and work in Sao Paulo city (3rd largest city in the world after Tokyo and Mexico City) and spend 90 minutes going 8 blocks in your car, or do anything possible to avoid the city, which in my case was taking a gig that meant spending 90 minutes going 100 miles one-way.

Since spending 3-4 hours a day in one's car (even speeding on an otherwise scenic road) is the very definition of losing one's soul, I am subletting a room in a 2 bedroom flat in the posh neighborhood of Campinas (the Philadelphia of Sao Paulo) about 8 blocks from my office. Since most of my time here involves running, drinking beer, blogging and otherwise surfing sites the wife is not so fond of, I am currently refering to it as the Bachelor Pad. As mentioned previously, I know I need a better name, but ManCave, just doesn't fit. I'll generally be sleeping up here two nights a week which makes getting in my speed work a lot easier.

Tonight's Tempo Run: 8km with 5k at tempo. Per the Ryan Hall training plan, tonight was supposed to be the first Hard Tempo run which basically is at Half Marathon pace (or 4:30 per km). I averaged 4:54 per km and felt very sluggish. Last week's 5k Moderate Tempo was at 4:4o something so I am not all that pleased with the run. My legs could still be somewhat tired from the intervals on Tuesday, or some baby-crying induced sleep deprivation maybe to blame. I'll just try to keep shedding off the lbs I gained over the past 4 months and hope the speed comes back.

Instead of my standard Strawberry-Pineapple-Orange Juice smoothie I tried a Mixed Red Fruits smoothie today. I saw the lady pop the pre-pulped frozen berries out of the freezer then blend them up with some freshly-squeezed OJ. The lack of freshness was apparent at the first sip so I ended up blending it with some grape gatorade I had in the car. Needless to say I'll be heading back to the Tutti-Frutti (yeah the name is ghey, but it's soo good).

Ok - I'm going to crash early, but next week is looking like lots of meetings in the city so I'll let the company spend some cash on fancy hotels and figger out how to ensure I get my runs in.

Cheers.
